Many VPNs came to provide anonymity. This is not true. They do reroute your traffic though their traffic. So if you live in an authoritarian country that limits your freedom on the Internet (like Texas), a VPN can route our traffic through another country. Whoever you connect to will see your IP address as the VPN server's IP address. So while it can be helpful, it is not truly secure. You are trusting the VPN with your Internet activity.
