- Japan is more cash-friendly than the U.S. It may be preferrable to convert currency before leaving.
- Credit cards widely accepted in cities.
- Always carry some cash. Estimate you'll need ¥30,000 to ¥45,000 (~$200-300) cash per week.
- ATMs at 7-Eleven are reliable for foreign cards.
IC Cards (Critical Infrastructure)
IC cards (Suica / Pasmo / ICOCA) are interoperable - they work nationwide regardless of branding. Suica may be the only one available to travelers.

On iPhone:
- Add Suica directly to Apple Wallet. Suica may be the only one available to visitors.
- Add value to it via Apple Pay.
